Great Bible Except One Thing

By Joe Felim

The type-font of the text is wonderful and allows a small amount of space for notes and thoughts as you read. This is a version that you can underline and not worry about marking the proceeding line. The cover feels smooth and not cheap. The readability is wonderful and while the text is big, you don’t get the sense that you need the extra large text because your eyes have gone bad; in fact, it’s the right size.

The pages are thin but not so thin that the text bleeds through from the other side. This is a plus considering that the Standard NRSV version makes it almost unreadable because of the defect.

The only thing that I found lacking was its width. It is a wide Bible and could have been shorten by an inch. While it’s advertised as your anywhere-you-go Bible, it is a bit big and not friendly for opening up in the train or bus. The weight is not heavy and you could carry this Bible with you in a larger bag - as it’s durability is sturdy.

Overall, great devotional Bible and should get a lot of use throughout the years.

Great Bible

By Joe Felim

This is the NLT2 in Large Print, Black Bonded Leather. Now remember, when you buy this Bible it is no little object. It is over 3100 pages and probably over 4 pounds as well. The print is much, much easier to read than on the normative Life App Bibles. I was hoping this edition would become available in the Tu-Tone leathers(which are soft and beautiful), but evidently there are no plans for such, so the binding is the typical stiff, rough-feeling bonded leather. The print is great, the notes are, too, and it is one very acceptable accurate translation that is easy to read and understand. Enjoy.

My mother has deteriorating eyesight due to diabetes and loves her Bible study class, but has found it increasingly difficult to see the explanatory notes below the text. This large print Bible has made all the difference! It helps her see, but isn’t terribly large and heavy. It is also a nice looking, high quality book. Thanks Amazon!

I probably have over a dozen Bibles and none are as good as this one. I love the “New Living Translation” it make reading the Bible more understandable and removes the ambiguity which many translations have. The thumb indexes are great for looking up references and the large print makes reading the text easier for those of us who need reading glassed. My only complaint is that the “Life Application” notes are not in large print and requires reading glasses where the Bible text is large enough to read without them. I would recommend this bible to anyone who need a large print Bible. For those of you who don’t need the large print can get this same Bible with normal type. I love this Bible and you would too.

A Very Good Study Bible

By Joe Felim

This is a pretty substantial Bible–and, by that I mean heavy. There are lots of articles from “big names” in Catholic Biblical scholarship. So, one will get the most up-to-date thinking on authorship, dates, readings, etc. and so forth. The translation is the same reliable NAB for the Old and New Testaments. The translation of the Hebrew Scriptures can be a little too dynamic, rendering perfectly understandable Hebrew idioms into English. But, the literal Hebrew is usually referenced in the notes. The same could be said for the New Testament. For all its girth, it is not a pretty Bible, though, and the pages are thin. My great disappointment is the bowdlerized version of the Psalms which have been “inclusivized” to the point of mistranslation. It’s one thing to translate the generic word for “man” as “human being” or whatever (no, I have no problem with that); quite another to change third-person address into second-person (i.e., “He is the LORD” becomes “You are the LORD.”) This is not always done consistently, however, which makes the slipshod translation look even more inconsistent and slipshod.

The Catholic Study Bible is one of the best study bibles for students and scholars of biblical criticism. The biggest asset: the extensive Reading Guides, which are very helpful for gaining a historical perspective and general background on all books of the bible. The New American Bible translation and footnotes are understandable enough, but this study bible lacks an important feature: an index or concordance. This study bible is recommended mainly for those in serious critical bible study, not those in mainstream Christianity.
