Do Christians Use AA as a Hunting Ground to Convert Born Agains?
By Lance Winslow
Many have accused Alcoholics Anonymous of using it as a place to recruit folks to Christianity and that simply is not so. Now there are many churches that volunteer to run AA meetings or offer their facilities for the meetings, but that is really an unfair accusation. Now some alcoholics may get with others in the group to offer comfort and they might share the bible with these folks who are down on their luck, but that is a whole different issue.
It makes sense that individuals might talk about their faith with others and it makes sense because it is an easy hunting ground to convert people I suppose in that many of the people in AA have kind of hit bottom. You know the USMC and Boot camps like that tear you down and build you back up as a Marine or Soldier motif. Those who admit they have a problem are at a low-psychological point, but committed to make it work, so they are vulnerable to anything that might come along. Whether it is a religion of Christianity or a very negative cult. They may be desperate for companionship, help and replacing what is now gone, the alcohol.
I noticed that many people who had converted as born-again Christians did indeed do so at a relatively low-point in their life, or they thought was a low-point. Most said it was the best thing they ever did and it changed their lives. Of course changing that much would change your life I suppose. Since I am neither a bible thumper nor an alcoholic, I find this whole discussion intriguing indeed. I certainly hope this article is of interest and that is has propelled thought.
