Are you Sure!

By Felton Thompkins

In our quest to establish ourselves in the truth, we as Christian believers have, at one time or another, questioned the validity of our salvation. These questions and concerns are largely due to our own lack of understanding and a belief system that’s not rooted in love, and in God’s infallible word. Forever, O Lord thy word is settled in heaven. Psalms 119:89. KJV. Warning! This article is not for the super spiritual. This article is for those of us who have struggled in our walk with God, for those of us who have fallen short and continue to fall short each and everyday. So with that said, let’s get to the good stuff.

If you would, let me briefly give you some details of my life as a Christian. I was saved at the age of fifteen (15) or should I say I accepted the Lord Jesus into my heart at that time. Either one will do - they both are true. I attempted to live the do this and don’t do that Christian way of life - to no avail I might add. I burned out before I was six months born-again. Now some people will say He must not have been saved anyway but that’s not the truth!! So I lived life a little longer, went back to church, left the church, went back to church, left…. you get the point. In all of that coming and going, my salvation remained in tact. This brings me to the purpose of this article; that it might give you, the reader, the re-assurance of your Saviour and of your salvation. The scripture says For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: not of works lest any man should boast. Ephesians 2:8-9 (KJV). This is probably one of the most quoted verses in the Bible, yet the least believed and the most misunderstood. This simply means that you don’t do good deeds to get saved and you don’t do good deeds to remain saved.

Who are we going to believe - God or man? God said that His Word is settled in Heaven. Ps.119:89 Therefore our salvation is settled with Him. The subject of our salvation is inexhaustible, yet it can be exhausting if you think you need to do something spectacular to get it, or to keep it. This brings me to the next truth that I believe many don’t know about, or have grossly overlooked. Again the scripture says…For the gifts and calling of God are without repentance. Romans 11:29 (KJV). To put this in simple layman’s terms it means that God does not give you a gift and then get mad at you for doing something wrong, and take the gift back. No! This is something that man would do, but not God. His Word is settled in Heaven. Psa. 119:89.

Even if God did’nt say anything else about securing our salvation, these 3 verses of Scripture would be enough. But God knowing how hard it would be to convince us and the obstacles we would encounter from the enemy, He in his wisdom has expressed it throughout the Bible. Remember this: God cannot and will not lie, and He has promised in Hebrews 13:5 to never leave us nor forsake us. Jesus Christ the same yesterday and today, and forever. Hebrews 13:8.

In conclusion, I would like to leave this admonishment: take some time and meditate on these few verses of scripture; Psa. 119:89, Eph. 2:8-9, Romans 11:29 and the whole book of 1st John for about 5 days or more if needed. I also encourage you to do a word study on the words grace and gift. Well, there you have it! I’m dubbing this as my “Prescription to a Sound Mind” concerning the salvation of the Lord. I wish you much peace and love. God Bless.
